Growing Food for Donation: Multiple Uses for Extension, Research, Education, and Community Service
Dr. John Galbraith
Professor, School of Plant and Environmental Sciences, Virginia Tech
Wednesday, July 28, 2021 2-3 pm ET
Dr. Galbraith will discuss the New River Valley Glean Team, a Blacksburg, VA non-profit charity that grows food for donation on Virginia Tech property. The gardens are used for training and service hours for Master Gardeners, as experimental areas for improving soil health/quality, as research plots for plant varieties and entomology studies, as learning areas for agricultural production in urban settings and teaching areas for students, and to produce highly nutritious food for donation to area food providers. The emphasis is to donate fresh foods rather than processed foods to those of low income or food insecurity.
