Skepticism about scientific credibility hinders effective science communication with land managers (e.g., farmers, ranchers). Yet little is known about how credibility emerges in agri-environmental contexts. This talk includes findings from Dr. Wald’s NSF CAREER project, using in-depth interviews assessing land managers’ expectations of scientific credibility and a survey experiment investigating drivers of perceived scientific credibility in agri-environmental contexts.

The talk will highlight key results, such as conflicting definitions of source credibility and promising strategies that technoscientific actors (e.g., resource managers, extension educators) can use to engage land managers and more effectively encourage conservation action in working lands.
