Sara is a senior in Agricultural Sciences with a minor in Civic Agriculture and Food Systems as well as Leadership and Social Change. As her capstone project for the Civic Agriculture and Food Systems Pathway minor, she compiled the list of courses and conducted the interviews featured on this page as a way to get the word out about what food systems curriculum is offered here at Virginia Tech. Through her participation in the minor, Sara also worked at the Blacksburg Community Garden alongside Jenny Schwanke. When she graduates she will be working as a Live Management Trainee at Perdue Farms.

Sara has enjoyed her time at Virginia Tech greatly in large part due to the Civic Agriculture and Food Systems minor. The minor has connected her with many people who are like minded and interested in revamping local food systems and bringing agriculture to the local level once again. In her time in the minor, she has had a chance to build her knowledge about contemporary food systems issues and has been able to explore and experience approaches that bring much needed change.

She shared, “If I could say one thing to someone interested in the minor, it would be ‘Do it!’ I would not trade my experiences for anything. I have made so many connections and grown with those who I met in the very beginning. The sense of community that I encountered during this journey was insane.”
